Ahh, coconut water! If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one thing, this would be it. Better yet, it is already there! This water from young green coconuts is filled with so many nutrients, minerals, and electrolytes and is a perfect drink for rehydration. Legend has it that coconut water was given intravenously to Japanese soldiers during the war as it is said to have same properties as blood plasma. Coconut water has the same electrolyte content as our bodily fluids, and is an excellent electrolyte drink to replenish lost electrolytes from dehydration – a much better drink alternative than Gatorade.
Did you know that coconut water has twice as much potassium than a banana? Yep! The high potassium level in coconut water has been touted to help lower blood pressure, and also aid in muscle recovery after a workout at the gym. Drinking coconut water after a workout can help alleviate muscle aches and pains. I know personally for myself, if I drink this during a workout, that my muscles are much less sore. My daughter plays basketball and this was her drink of choice she took to her basketball games. From healthy skin, weight loss, rehydration, and lowering of blood pressure, coconut water is a stand alone product! My favorite brand of coconut water is VitaCoco – it is amazing! Costco sells it in bulk, and you can find it at most of your well stocked grocery stores. It even comes in different flavors – my favorite is pineapple coconut water – tastes just like pina colada 🙂
